How Long it takes to make a seat
I try to get a seat built as quickly as possible but I am a one man operation so it can take anywhere from a week to five weeks to complete a seat and get it shipped.
Gel vs. Memory Foam
For the past couple years I've been offering a comfort upgrade using either impact gel or memory foam. There are benefits and disadvantages to both and it seems like it's tough to recommend one or the other to someone I've never met and dont know how they sit on a particular seat. Well, all that is about to change as I've discovered a new product called Gel Foam. The impact gel was originally designed for wheel chair bound people to offer some comfort and memory foam was designed for the mattress manufacturers. Seat builders of all sorts have been using both products for years with good results but there were always drawbacks. The gel would get hot and if not installed properly could destroy leather and vinyl. The memory foam had a tendency to crush out and offer no support if the rider was too heavy. The Gel Foam has been designed to eliminate the negatives and offer only the positive aspect of both the gel and the memory foam. As you can see in the pictures it wont crush out and because it is a foam base it is breathable and wont get hot in the sun. I have been testing this stuff pretty harshly and so far I dont see any problems and I cant say enough good about it. I can literally take the seat off my sporty and throw a piece of this stuff on the bare frame and ride the bike without discomfort. Because of this I'm starting now to offer only the Gel Foam as an upgrade and I will no longer be offering gel or memory foam as options. The Gel Foam is a bit more expensive but in my opinion its well worth it.
Leather vs. Vinyl
Both leather and vinyl have benefits and drawbacks. When it comes to comfort you can't do better than leather. Unlike vinyl, leather is a natural material thats very breathable. That is a big bonus on long rides. The down side to leather is the maintenance. In order to get long life from your leather seat you need to regularly clean and condition it. The down side to leather is the up side to vinyl. Vinyl doesnt have to be maintained as much as leather. Just wipe it off with a little soap and water now and then and your good to go. Some companies do sell vinyl conditioner and it doesn't hurt to use that once in a while too.
